Opal Gems, About Opals

  Page   1

The gems and jewelry industry has known opal gem stones for many decades. If you still find that many gem and jewelry lovers are not aware of most opal varieties, it is surely the fault of jewelers who have not cared to educate them. The most popular type of opal is the white opal, other opals like blue opals, fire opals and even pink opals are not very well known. Despite the fact that opal stones are mined outside Australia too, the country continues to keep the title of 'The Opal Country'.

When it comes to studying the origin of the name 'opal' two languages take credit for it. The Sanskrit word 'upala' means precious stone and many scholars believe that this was the language that gave opal it's name. Greek also has a word, 'opallios' meaning change of color. A significant number of people believe that the name originated from this Greek word. In any case, this issue is of academic interest and one need not get into serious discussions on the topic. Opal is the October birth stone, you can use a white opal, black opal, green opal, blue opal, fire opal or even a pink opal for your October birthstone ring. The truth however is that, most of the opal gem stone jewels that you come across will be made with white opal gems.

A very interesting charateristic of opal stones are the presence of moisture. An 8 to 10% water content is normal for most opal gemstones. As you will shortly read, the presence of moisture is important for the beauty of the opal. If you look closely at a white opal gemstone, you will notice specks of color flashes. Depending on the quaity of the opal, you might see very few or a substantial number of these color flashing specks. This phenomenon is called the 'play of color' and gemologists refer to it as opalescence. Technically this effect is caused by the moisture shining on tiny silica spheres that are present in an opal. So keep in mind that the silica shperes and the moisture are both responsible for making an opal gem stone attractive. Anything that causes the moisture to dry up will reflect negatively on the beauty of this stone. More information on this topic is covered in the paragraphs (below) talking about caring for your opal jewelry.

We talked about Australia being the main source for opal gems. This however does not mean that all opals are mined in Australia. Certain types of opal are infact not found in Australia at all. As the knowledge of different types of opal gems spreads, stones mined from other mining locations get their due share of publicity. One of these opal varieties is an orange opal called fire opal. Fire opal is an gem that can range in color from a pale yellowish-orange to a deep reddish-orange.  Much of the fire opal that is traded in the gems and jewelry markets is mined in Mexico. Findings of fire opal gemstones have also been found in Brazil but, the color of Brazilian fire opal does not impress as much as fire opals from Mexico.

An interesting opal find has been made in Peru, a country that you least expect to find opals. This opal gem stone is a pale pink gem which is opaque, you can refer to the color of this pale pink opal as a pastel pink shade. Pink opals do not have color flashes or color play, they also show no transparency. The good thing about pink opal stones is that, they can be found in fairly large sizes. It is also possible to get impressive pink opal beads. The favorable price of pink opal stones is what makes it very visible in both, gold and silver opal jewelry.

When talking about caring for and cleaning opals, a few clear suggestions are in order. Do not wear an opal gemstone jewel when doing heavy physical activity. It is best to avoid the gem from getting band or struck by physical impact. Since opals contain a small proportion of moisture, you should avoid doing anything that can destroy or negatively affect the moisture. Heat sources, detergents and utrasonic cleaners is something that you need to keep away from opal gems. If you need to clean an opal gemstone or jewel, use a soft clean cloth and some cool (room temperature) water. Dip the jewel for around 15 seconds in the water and then wipe with the soft cloth.  Do not store your opal jewelry bundled with other jewels, hard metals and gems can cause the gemstone to scratch or damage. You should also not leave your opal gem stone jewel near a heated source, this could cause the moisture in the opal gemstone to dry up.

Who Is Kaisilver?

Having established itself as the world's leading online custom jewelry provider, Kaisilver now extends it's merchandise line to include gems. While there is no shortage of gem stones in the global market, reliable sources for the retail buyer requirements are not many. Most retail gem dealers work with limited inventories, this reduces buyer options. Another problem with these small dealers is the lack of information and reliability when it comes to gem authenticity and value for money. Kaisilver with it's wide network of gemstone mining and manufacturing resources, is the best source for gems of all types, shapes, sizes and cuts. With a support team that is compromised of jewelry and gemstone experts, the advice and suggestions made by the team relate to your requirements and not to fixed sales targets. The website shows a small sampling of the gems that we offer. You can infact request for just about any gem on the globe. All gems are sourced directly from the source, closely inspected and then custom cut by our expert cutters. With a buyer base that includes fashion models, government officials, casino and resort owners, lawyers, financial experts, students and professors, doctors and surgeons, sportsmen and newsreaders we have become the preferred choice for quality gems and jewelry. How To Order?

The process to order gems and custom jewelry at Kaisilver is similar. We do not expect you to make a rush purchase. We do wish that you take the time to discuss your requirements with our experts. They will be in a position to provide constructive suggestions that will guide you to make well informed buying decisions. Email all your requirements to sales@kaisilver.com provide as much inputs as possible to help us make relevant suggestions. For example if you are keen on getting a green gemstone but, are not particular about it being an emerald mention this in your email. Our gem experts might suggest a green tourmaline or even a peridot instead of an emerald. This suggestion would reduce our profit margins but will give you a gem that, is much cheaper and even more durable as compared to an emerald. When it comes to payments we offer some very suitable options. Paypal is the preferred form of payment, it is fair to the buyer and seller. The buyer when using paypal never needs to reveal credit card of bank information to the seller. We also accept direct bank transfers but prefer to do this on a case by case basis. When it comes to online transactions these days, both buyer and seller are afraid of frauds. It is quite possible that you do not feel comfortable working with us at Kaisilver. We sometimes feel a little uncomfortable with certain transactions too and prefer to keep away from them. There have always been fears of processing payments through Western Union money transfers. With the latest fraud reports, fake sellers and even fake buyers have been pulling off many online frauds using this mode of payment. At the same time we do understand that armed forces from the U.S who are stationed in various global positions sometimes have no other mode of payment besides Western Union. We therefore accept this mode of payment but at the same time, request you to avoid this mode if you do not feel comfortable using it. Shipping is done through FEDEX and you can expect a production lead time of around 4 to 5 weeks from the date of order confirmation and receipt of payment. Every jewel is fully custom made and requires the complete attention and concentration of highly skilled craftsmen. When it comes to gems, we could provide faster lead times and this can be discussed for each specific order.
